Born and raised in the Episcopal Church, Barbara has been a member of a diverse collection of urban and suburban churches in New Jersey, California, England, and Massachusetts. Seeking opportunities in adult education and service, she and her husband, Brady Millican, arrived at Church of The Redeemer in the fall of 2011. Barbara serves as a lector and a LEM and leads a silent prayer group with her husband on Monday evenings at the church. She attends Bible Studies on Thursday and Sunday mornings and volunteers for the B-SAFE program at Epiphany School. Barbara has also served on the Mission/Outreach and Pastoral Care Committees. A retired English and Performing Arts teacher, Barbara continues to share her love of literature with students of all ages. She has taught classes at Redeemer on the poetry of John Donne, George Herbert, and TS Eliot and will lead a Lenten series on the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins this spring. She also volunteers her time reading Shakespeare to people with disabilities. A writer of poetry, essays, and creative non-fiction, Barbara’s work has been published in various national and international journals including The Anglican Theological Review, Teachers’ Forum, and The London Arts Council Journal. When she isn’t writing or reading the Bard, Barbara enjoys gardening, cooking, traveling, rock climbing, and hosting house concerts with her husband in their Jamaica Plain home.
