Stewardship 2009

Treasure for the Heart, the Soul, and the Mind

We offer our sincere thanks to all of the Captains and Parishioners who sent in their pledges during the Annual Pledge Drive.  In order to draw up the parish budget for the forthcoming year, it is extremely important that we hear from everyone who is still considering a pledge.  Funds to fulfill your gift may be paid through December 31, 2009.

If you are unsure how to pledge, or if you would like further information about Stewardship   2009, please contact either Elliot Davis or Rick Weed, Stewardship Co-Chairs.  We would be glad to assist you in every way possible.

The strength of our parish depends on you.  Please be generous as you consider your gift to Stewardship 2009.

 Yours in Christ,

 Elliot Bostwick Davis                                                       Rick Weed

Church School at the Redeemer

Dear Church School Families,

There is a fun and worthwhile church school field trip/service project planned for all children in church school age 5 and up!

On SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7 at 10 am, all children age 5 and older will go to the Sophia Snow Place retirement home in West Roxbury and share our anticipation of Advent by singing Christmas Carols to the residents.  We will leave by bus at 10 am with any interested children who have a permission slip and will return to the Redeemer no later than 12 noon.  Mary Reynders and 4 other teachers are going plus 3 youth assistants.  I will stay at church school with other teachers/youth assistants for those children who do not wish to participate and for our regular childcare.

The Sophia Snow Place is a wonderful retirement community, conveniently nearby.  The residents are so looking forward to our children visiting and brightening up their Sunday morning.

Please sign up your child by sending in this attached permission slip. It can also be found in paper form at the Church School desk.

*Blessings* to you all as we enter into this special Advent season and prepare for the birth of our Lord!

 Faithfully,

 Sarah

Youth Bible Study

The Youth Bible Study is for students in the 6th grade and up which meets Sunday morning in the back classroom at 9:40am.  In October, the Bible study began delving into the book of 1 Samuel.  We studied the call of the prophet Samuel as a little boy, the stealing of the Ark by the Philistines, and are now reading about the rise and fall of King Saul.  As always, we will complete our Bible Study with a Bible oriented game like Bible Pictionary, Jeopardy, or charades.  The Bible Study is also continuing its work of writing prayers for the All Parish Eucharist.  Bible Study will meet this month on November 16th, and 24th.  Please have your youth join us for fun and learning.

Youth and Family Fellowship Events 2008-09

We are going to have a great time this year as the Church of the Redeemer gathers momentum in Family Ministry.  Last year we got off to a good start with our youth and family fellowship events, and we are looking to expand on our experiences.  One lesson I learned from last year is to be very flexible with scheduling.  You will see that with just a few exceptions, I have not yet scheduled dates or times for events.  What I would like to do, is have parents and youth check out the Redeemer Family Blog at www.redeemerchestnuthill.blogspot.com.  Through this blog we can have conversations that can include the scheduling of events.  Hopefully, through this better communication, we can have even better support for our fellowship events.  The blog is also a way to suggest other activities.  I have found in my short time as a priest that many of the best ideas for family ministry are not mine, so please feel free to make suggestions through the blog, or through me personally.

2nd Annual Redeemer Football Game

 Image Preview

November is the time of year when we put baseball and soccer behind us and pick up the pigskin for a cold weather game.  Last year we had a fun football game, but the curate’s team didn’t win.  I am looking for change this year!  At Cassidy Park in Cleveland Circle on Sunday, November 23rd, when the oldest of our youth are planning for the big thanksgiving football games, the younger than high school age youth, can challenge me on the gridiron.  The game will begin at 1:00.  This will give us enough time to help with the Thanksgiving in-gathering and change out of our church clothes.  In all seriousness, this is not a game played at Division 1A speed, and everyone is welcome to play: especially girls.  Lace up those sneakers or cleats; we are going to have a football game!  If you are interested in playing, please e-mail me at meames@redeemerchestnuthill.org or post it on the blog at www.redeemerchestnuthill.blogspot.com.  I will want to make sure we have enough water and orange slices to keep everyone hydrated and full of energy.

Cocktails, Dinner, and Auction begin at 6:00 pm

Don’t miss this festive, fanciful evening of fellowship and fun!

Saturday, December 6th

Market: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Celebrate … Shop … Give … Help!

(1) Sign Up to Volunteer

Come one, Come All!!

Sign up for two hours of fellowship to make wreaths, help decorate, serve lunch, among other possibilities.  Use the sign up sheets posted in the hallway outside the church office.  Please sign up before December 1st.  Questions? Contact Christmas Market Volunteer chair Carol Post-Pfaelzer (apfaelzer@aol.com, 617-738-7983), or one of the Christmas Market co-chairs, Julia Woodard (jebillo@aol.com) or Lisa Farber (farmince@aol.com).

(2) Cook for the Bake Table

Bake and donate bread, pies, cakes, cookies, brownies, or other treats.  Please list all ingredients – it’s required by the health department.  Donate store-bought specialty items such as fancy spices, sauces, vinegars, mustards, condiments, party dips, etc.  Contact Christmas Market co-chairs, Julia Woodard (jebillo@aol.com) or Lisa Farber (farmince@aol.com) for Bake Table contributions or ideas.

(3) Supply greens for Wreaths

Please save your evergreen pruning through November and bring the clippings to the old parish hall Mon. 12/1 or Tues. 12/2. We especially appreciate boxwood, holly, leucothoe, juniper, and white pine!! Questons? Call Tish 617-566-5147 or Louisa 617-739-6884.

(4) Plan to buy your tree

Freshly cut balsam fir trees!  Most Christmas trees come from Canada, which means more travel time, more time to dry out on the back of a tractor trailer.  Our trees come straight from a small Vermont tree farm.  Buy it at the market, set it up in a bucket of water in your back yard until you’re ready to bring it in.  You’ll have the freshest tree on the block.

THANKSGIVING INGATHERING

Sunday, November 23rd

during the 10:30 am Service

This year, the Redeemer will again gather food for the Thanksgiving meal for the homeless and the working poor.  This year our Thanksgiving meal collection will go to the Cor Unum Meal Center in Lawrence, MA.   Lawrence is one of the poorest cities in the United States and is the poorest city in Massachusetts.  Thirty-three percent of the people of Lawrence live below the poverty line.  Of children under the age of eighteen, 49.9 percent live in households below the poverty line.  The Cor Unum Meal Center is a non-profit meal center located in South Lawrence.  Cor Unum provides free, nutritious meals in a safe environment to families, the working poor, and the homeless. Cor Unum feeds hundreds of people at every meal daily since it commenced operation in September 2006.

For their Thanksgiving Meal it would be wonderful if our Church School families would contribute several of the items listed below:

·       Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers: Whole Butternut squash (20)

·       Kindergarten and 1st Grade:  Stove Top Stuffing (need 50 boxes)

·       2nd and 3rd Grade: Canned cranberry sauce and jars of gravy (need 30 of each)

·       4th  and 5th Grade:  Mitts and gloves for children (need 30 of each)*

·       6th and 7th Grade: 5 lb bags of white potatoes (need 10 bags)

·       Confirmation Class:  New, men’s large, white socks (need 30 pairs)

* Stretchy mitts and gloves can be purchased at the Rugged Bear for $2-$4/pair

Contributions can be dropped off through Sunday November 23rd in the collection baskets in the front of the church office or at the church school desk. If you don’t have time to shop, or you don’t have children in the church school, please consider writing a check towards the purchase of turkeys (assume a single turkey costs $20-$25). Checks should be made out to the Church of the Redeemer and please write Thanksgiving Collection in the memo section on the check.  Thank you for your generosity and happy Thanksgiving! Please contact Laura Patton (617-232-5175 or laurated@rcn.com) with any questions.
