Queen Esther Children’s Liturgy

This Thursday

5:00 pm, October 1st

A simple Jewish orphan girl becomes queen of the greatest empire in the world only to find that her own people are being threatened by her husband’s chief advisor.  Will Esther say nothing and save herself, or will she find the courage to save her people?  Those of all ages are invited to a dramatic retelling of the Book of Esther.

Participants in the Redeemer Drama Workshop will be assisting me in presenting this important Bible story.  There will be dramatic skits, costumes, hands-on activities for children of all ages, and a lot of fun.  Please join us at 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 1st for our first Children’s Liturgy of the year.  The queen requests your prayers and participation.

The Redeemer is starting a new discussion series focused on supporting

the elders in our community and their families.

HOME-STAYS NEEDED

NOVEMBER 7TH!

Rob Shay is returning to Boston in November, and he is bringing the fabulous “University Singers” from the University of Missouri, where he is now the Director of the School of Music.   This choir, the “show choir” of the University, will be singing at the 10:30am service at the Redeemer on November 8th.

Home-stays are needed for the singers for one night, who will arrive the afternoon of Saturday the 7th.   The choir sings during church on the 8th and then returns to Missouri.

We have some 50+ people to house, so your hospitality is greatly appreciated.   If you would like to host some of these fabulous musicians, please notify Laine Walters Young in the church office via email office@redeemerchestnuthill.org or telephone 617 566 7679 ext. 10 as soon as possible.

Thank you!

-Michael Murray, Choirmaster and Organist

University Singers in Vienna

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

at the 10:30a.m. Holy Eucharist

The University Singers is the most prominent and advanced choral ensemble at the University of Missouri and offers a proud tradition of excellence in choral singing. The repertoire is varied, including major works from all periods of music history. The choral excellence of this ensemble has captured the attention of audiences in Washington, D.C. and New York, at national conventions of professional music organizations, and on tour in England, France, Italy, Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

On October 18th immediately following the 10:30 service the Fellowship Committee invites you to the Old Parish Hall to hear from writers in our midst. Lunch will be served as we hear excerpts from books and poems, ask questions and learn about these writers’ processes as authors. We are grateful to our participants for their willingness and ensure those who attend an enlightening experience!

(If you are a writer and have not been contacted please email liza_jones@shs.org. We’d be very glad to include you.)

Christmas Auction 2009

Don’t let those unused Celtics, ballet, Patriots, theatre, Bruins, opera or Red Sox tickets go to waste!  Please consider donating them to the Redeemer Auction.  Would you consider hosting a fun dinner, dance or cocktail party with your friends?  Do you have a vacation home that might be unoccupied for a short time?  Do you love to bake or are you Jacques Pepin or Julia Child in the kitchen?  How about donating a meal delivery or treats for a soccer team!  Are you willing to instruct budding novices in the fine art of flower arranging or gardening?  The Christmas Market Auction Committee is looking for items or services for the auctions and we need your help.  Please contact Lisa Farber at (617) 738-1477 or farmince@aol.com  if you are able to help.  We welcome any and all donations.

Don’t forget…

Redeemer parishioners Anne Grandin and Samantha Mills with a group of Ugandans from Pilgrim.

Instead of the Yard Sale that we have had in the past to raise money for our Mission Trips,  the Church of the Redeemer is proposing a 'virtual yard sale' this year.  Please send to Laine in the office a picture, description, price, and contact information of anything that you would like to donate to the "Yard Sale".

Your offering will be posted in the classified donations section on our website and other publications.  Parishioners interested in your item will pay the church and then arrange pick up of your item directly with you.  No need to ever bring your item to the church or have Elton pick it up or wait for a certain date.  The 'virtual Yard Sale' will take place all year.  Money from the sale of your item will go towards funding the parish's mission trips.

Youth Bible Study

9:40 am Back Classroom

The Youth Bible Study began last month by looking at Solomon and the beginning of 1 Kings.  We will continue our look at the book over the next month.  We will be studying Solomon’s order to build the Temple, the placement of the Ark of the Covenant in the temple, and Solomon’s prayer of dedication to the Temple.

We begin each class by reading scripture, and we conclude by playing Biblically-inspired games like Bible Jeopardy, Bible Pictionary, and Bible Charades.  Reading the Bible regularly is a critical part of Christian formation.

October Bible Study Dates

October 4th          Solomon and the Temple

October 18th        The Ark in the Temple –  Solomon’s prayer of dedication

October 25th        God’s promise and warning  to King Solomon

 Foyers Reminder

Foyers  is for newcomers, long-time parishioners and everyone in between.  In the relaxed environs of someone’s home, while eating good food and perhaps even having a few drinks, take this opportunity to get to know or perhaps get-to-know-better your fellow parishioners.  This is a wonderful program sponsored by the Fellowship Committee and we hope many of you will consider signing up in the office (office@redeemerchestnuhill.org) his fall for this wonderful program.   If you have any questions or concerns please contact Fellowship Committee co-chairs, Liza Jones (lizajones1@verizon.net) or Mary
Crown (mecrown@lotsoc.com).

  Stewardship 2010: Sow a Seed

During the month of October, we launch Stewardship 2010 with the Rector’s sermon on Sunday, October 4th, followed by lay sermons on consecutive Sundays.  The Stewardship materials and pledge cards will be mailed out on October 5th, and our wonderful volunteer Shepherds will start contacting you shortly thereafter.  They are each charged with getting your pledge into their Stewardship tote bag by October 31st to be delivered to the Altar on November 1st, Stewardship Sunday.  Because of the geographic diversity of our parish, some will be able to contact you and come to your door with the bag; others will call or email you to make arrangements.   Please help them in their essential work that supports our staff and facilities that allow the Redeemer to be an excellent house of worship.

Stewardship Financial Fact of the Week:

Annual pledge income in 2009 will come in at $649,000, or $30,000 below the giving level of 2007.  80 pledging units increased their pledges (thank you!), and the Redeemer had 30 new pledging units. These were not enough to offset the loss from 100 pledging units who either decreased or did not pledge in 2009 (including losses from our Redeemer family via a move or death.)

Call for Stewardship Tenders

Want to help but not quite ready to be a Shepherd?

We have many very busy Shepherds who work downtown, are on the road, are full time caring for kids and many other good works.  Some could use a hand with some of the practical aspects of collecting pledge cards, and getting them physically into the bags. If anyone would like to volunteer to help our shepherds with some of the logistics, and get very discrete assignments to help pick up a pledge between October 10 and November 1, or for other small tasks (helping with detail of training or other social gatherings), please contact Laine in the office.

2009-2010 Classical Concert Series

Our own Keisuke Wakao, oboist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is arranging  three concerts at the Church of the Redeemer again this year.  There will be a variety of professional musicians of the highest caliber, and each concert will be followed by a reception.  One will be in the fall, one in the winter and another in the spring.  This is a wonderful opportunity to hear fabulous music and to invite friends and neighbors to visit our parish.

Please consider being a Sponsor, Patron, or Benefactor to help underwrite the costs of these events.  A special cocktail party will be held with Keisuke on October 4th to honor Sponsors where he will be accessible for conversation and will play the oboe in a mini-performance. Names of Sponsors, Patrons, and Benefactors will be listed in the programs if so desired.
