Youth Bible Study

9:40 am Back Classroom

In Youth Bible Study, we are continuing to follow the life of King Solomon.  In October, we read about how Solomon asked God for wisdom instead of riches or power.  We also learned how faithful Solomon was in constructing the temple, and we learned what a good king he was in his prayers to the Lord.

Unfortunately, in the readings to come, Solomon will not remain this faithful.  As the king ages, he loses his monotheism.  He prays to a number of foreign gods and takes wives from nearby nations.  Enemies of the king lurk inside and outside of Solomon’s kingdom.  We will read about the fall of Solomon’s empire this month.  We will also read about the new country of Israel that is formed from the northern tribes as well as the Davidic kingdom of Judah that is formed after Solomon’s death.

November Bible Study Dates

November 15th – The new Kingdoms of Israel and Judah

November 22nd – Jeroboam’s troubles

The office will be closed

Wednesday, November 11th

 in observance of Veteran’s Day

However, Men’s Bible Study and

Morning Prayer and Healing will still take place.

 Foyers Reminder

Foyers  is for newcomers, long-time parishioners and everyone in between.  In the relaxed environs of someone’s home, while eating good food and perhaps even having a few drinks, take this opportunity to get to know or perhaps get-to-know-better your fellow parishioners.  This is a wonderful program sponsored by the Fellowship Committee and we hope many of you will consider signing up in the office (office@redeemerchestnuthill.org) this fall for this wonderful program.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact Fellowship Committee co-chairs, Liza Jones (lizajones1@verizon.net) or Mary
Crown (mecrown@lotsoc.com).

Confirmation Class

The Confirmation Class in October had a great deal of fun talking about sin.  We started in the Bible by talking about Adam and Eve and concluded by watching the popular teen movie Mean Girls.  We had fun and learned a lot.  In November, we will begin our look at church authority by discussing what is often called the three-legged “Anglican Stool” of determining our theology through the three sources of scripture, tradition, and reason.  We will discuss the first two this month, and will watch a Harry Potter movie dealing with tradition.

Confirmation Class Dates

11/15         5:00    Confirmation Movie Night – Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone

Local Octet, Zefiro, to Perform

at the Redeemer November 19th

Zefiro--a Boston/Providence-based octet devoted to performing vocal music of the 14th-17th centuries--looks forward to performing for the first time at Church of the Redeemer on Thursday, November 19, 2009, at 7:30 pm.

The concert pairs Tomás Luis de Victoria’s joyous Missa O quam gloriosum for All Saints’ Day with the haunting Tenebrae Responsories for Holy Saturday by Gesualdo di Venosa.  Founded by six members of the group formerly known as Passio, Zefiro takes inspiration from specialist groups from around the world such as the Tallis Scholars, the Sixteen, and the Taverner Consort. Zefiro's credits include winning a project grant from the Somerville Arts Council, the chapter of the Massachusetts Cultural Council and National Endowment for the Arts, and serving as artists in residence (as Passio) to Bennington College in Vermont.

Zefiro will also offer the Victoria/Gesualdo concert program on Friday, October 30, 2009 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Providence at 8:00 pm, and on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Brickbottom Artists Association Gallery in Somerville at 8 pm.

Admission is $15 per person ($10 for students and seniors).

Please visit http://www.zefiroensemble.com/ for more information.

During the month of November the Outreach Committee will be collecting canned goods and other non-perishable items for the Newton and Brookline Food Pantries.  This is an important way to remember those in need as we approach Thanksgiving.

Between now and November 22nd, please leave your contributions in the baskets in front of the parish office or in the back hallway.  Offerings will be brought up to the altar on Sunday, November 22nd.

Outreach Committee members will deliver the collection to the food pantries during the week of 11/23. Please see the Redeemer website for a list of items needed by the food pantries.  Thank you for your support!

Click here for a list of the food items requested.

St. Stephen's After-School Program Book Collection

Our Annual Christmas Book Collection for the 60 children in St. Stephen's After-School Programs is just around the corner.  Selection boards will be up for three Sundays, beginning Sunday, November 22.  Watch this newsletter and the Sunday bulletin for more information about one of Redeemer's most popular collections!  Learn more about St. Stephen's After-School Programs at http://www.ststephensbos.org/afterschoolprograms.
