We are a Christian parish in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. We invite you to join our community. |
The Vestry is the elected governing board of the parish, with elections held each February at the Annual Meeting. It considers the parish's business matters and hears reports from every area of church life throughout the year. Its officers are the two Wardens (Karla Todd Barrett and Dan McCarthy), the Clerk (Michael Aylward), the Treasurer (David Walker), and the Assistant Treasurer (Mike Shade). The Vestry also constitutes the vestry ad hoc, standing, and advisory committees by resolution.

The Nominating Committee identifies, discerns and nominates qualified lay members to stand for election to the Vestry and other elected parish offices. The Vestry supplies a list of potential candidates, and the committee may recruit one to three additional lay members from it. Its work is prayerful discernment, candidate recruitment and preparing a slate. It reports its recommended slate to the Rector and Vestry before the Annual Meeting.

Pledges from parishioner households are the church's primary source of revenue. The Stewardship Committee invites and encourages giving while keeping individual giving confidential.

It recruits and organizes volunteers for outreach events and publicizes the parish's mission partners and their needs. It recommends recipients for Redeemer's Outreach Grants and for the All-Parish Christmas and Easter Offerings, using published grant criteria. It also reviews proposals for new initiatives submitted through the parish website. If you are interested in learning more, serving as a partner liaison, or volunteering, please contact Dan McCarthy or Maisie Pollard.

The FUEL Advisory Committee guides FUEL, Redeemer's ministry that packs weekend food bags for students who rely on supplemental food. FUEL serves 19 Newton and Boston schools, plus St. Stephen's B-SAFE program and the Epiphany School. Volunteers shop, shelve, pack bags on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and deliver them weekly. FUEL is always in need of volunteers to bag food, deliver bags to neighboring schools, or join them for fun and fellowship. If you are interested in volunteering or learning more, please contact Sue Dickinson.

The Sunday School Committee supports the parish's Christian formation program for children: nursery care, Godly Play, the Apostles, Saints & Martyrs, and Youth Groups. It recruits and supports the volunteer storytellers, doorkeepers and youth assistants who staff Sunday Families programming. With the Fellowship Committee, it co-hosts all-parish events through the church year, such as the Chili Cook-Off and Shrove Tuesday pancakes. It also helps the clergy and Wardens with staffing transitions in children's ministry.

The Church Service League (CSL), founded in 1922, unites parishioners in a program of worship, study, service and fellowship. It organizes three important “inreach” ministries: fellowship, newcomers, and Parish Care.

The Fellowship Committee builds up the Redeemer community and deepens bonds among parishioners of every generation. Its events range from coffee hour after the 10:00 service to small-group dinners, parish picnics and parties in parishioners' homes. It partners with the Sunday School Committee on feast-day dinners and seasonal events. It depends on the hospitality and work of many volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Michael Aylward.

The Newcomers Committee helps new members find their place in the parish community. Members welcome newcomers at coffee hour and invite them to Newcomer coffees with the clergy after the 10:00 service. They also invite newcomers to Fellowship Dinners and Sunday Night Suppers so they can meet people and learn about the parish. Are you a Newcomer looking for your place at the Redeemer. Let Newcomers be your first stop!

Altar Guild members work behind the scenes to prepare and adorn the altars and church for every worship service. They care for the altar linens, the communion vessels and the clergy's vestments. They also change the hangings to mark the seasons of the church year and arrange the flowers. Altar Guild members are all volunteers and warmly welcome new members all year round! Please contact Karen Robertson for more information on how to get involved!

Parish Care combines parishioner compassion and the clergy's pastoral care into one coordinated ministry of support, presence and prayer. It exists so that no one in the parish faces illness, grief, transition or loneliness alone. Clergy and lay volunteers offer practical help, compassionate listening, prayer and sacramental care. It is open both to people who need care and to those called to offer it. Making meals, providing rides, or just offering prayers are the “hands-on” work of every Christian. If you would like to help, please contact Velura Perry.

Ad hoc committees from recent Vestry resolutions
The Vestry established this committee on October 13, 2026, to define more clearly the aggregate needs of our parish’s 141 year old campus. Working with the Rector and Wardens, they will review the 2020 Strategic Plan, the 2018 Beha Campus Assessment, and current Rector and Vestry priorities. They will also weigh external pressures such as heating plant replacement (around 2032), BERDO 2050, accessibility, Weld House’s condition and parking. Sometime in 2027 the will deliver a brief report, "What the Parish Desires to Be," and present it to the Vestry in Spring 2027; it is advisory only and dissolves once the report is accepted. If you would like to speak with members of the committee, please reach out to one of the co-chairs.

The Vestry established this committee to evaluate the parish's technology systems and digital tools. It is authorized to review the parish database, financial systems, website and related technology infrastructure. It will present findings and recommendations to the Rector and Vestry. Its work supports the 2020 Strategic Plan's one open priority, Administration and Communication.
